  • Strengthen team working

Who is coaching and mentoring for?

Coaching and Mentoring can help anyone to release their potential. "People do grow, learn, thrive and excel when organisations make provision for particular and specific interpersonal support at key times" Cross 1998

You can take up to six hours over six months to spend on your personal development.

What is the Coaching and Mentoring Service offering?

You can choose a Coach/Mentor with the help of a skilled matcher. Having chosen, you are asked to get in touch with them and plan a first meeting to talk about whatever it is that you want to work on. If you find that the meeting is helpful, you and your Coach/Mentor will plan further meetings, usually for up to 4 x 90 minute meetings.

This is a mentoring service which applies coaching skills and techniques, so we use the terms coaching and mentoring interchangeably.

The mentor cannot act as an advocate, witness, or provide advice on disputes that the mentee may be involved in. Other organisations such as defence organisations and the BMA provide this service, and a list of available resources can be found on our website. However mentors can help develop plans for coping or developing new opportunities.

What does a coach/mentor do?

"Mentors are people who, through their action and work, help others to achieve their potential" Shea 1992

“Coaching and mentoring are learning relationships which help people to take charge of their own development, to release their potential and to achieve results which they value.” Connor and Pokora 2007

The programme enables you to talk to your mentor in complete confidence (within the guidelines of the GMC) about professional, work life balance or career issues. Your mentor will be an experienced individual in their professional field and trained in coaching skills.

The success of coaching and mentoring is in the establishment of an effective relationship, based upon mutual respect, honesty and understanding, combined with structured questioning to enable the mentee to find their own solutions.

An effective coach/mentor is honest, open discrete and committed to supporting development. A coach/mentor will support the mentee in reflecting on their situation by respectfully challenging the status quo, giving skilled feedback and identifying learning opportunities.

Clinicians practising in London will be funded for coaching and mentoring if they fall within one of the following groups:

  • A doctor or dentist in a London Foundation or Specialty training scheme
  • In the first 2 years of a Return to Practice Scheme
  • A healthcare professional Bands 5 - 8 in a recognised training scheme, such as preceptorship or development role

Coaching and Mentoring can only continue during the period of grace between gaining a CCT and relinquishing a training number if the application has been received prior to being awarded a CCT. No new applications will be accepted post CCT.

If you are interested in the service but do not at the moment fall into one of the funded categories, please keep a watch on the website as the situation may change.

Choosing a coach/mentor

Our service recognises that the relationships that work best are those where the mentee has been provided with enough information to make the selection of a Coach/Mentor. Matchers conduct a detailed telephone discussion with each Mentee to facilitate that choice.
